Dinah has stopped by with her dad so see the progress on her violin, and to get a good look at the inside before I glue the assemply together.
She is a piano instructor who wants to learn to play the violin and knows the value of a fine instrument in music
..{Opus # 16 violin}.
Here I have glued the body together with fresh hot hide glue. Again, the glue is washed from the outside of the joint with hot water and towelled dry.
I use spool clamps with a leather pad in contact with the wood plates. The leather has a groove cut in its surface so that it does not put excess pressure on the extreme outer edge of the plate
The body assembly is stored in a warm location to dry overnight.
The reason for the lack of detail pictures during the gluing process is that the glue sets up quickly and requires both hands and speed of assembly for success.
The next day, I remove the assembly clamps. These clamps, by the way, need to checked for tightness several times during the drying process. Just a firm 'finger tight' is adequate.
By the time all is complete,
our violin will have used 160
to 200 hours of direct labor,
spread out over three months.

..Parts are dried twice in desiccant bag to remove moisture before gluing up...
..To aid in assembly on glue up: insert (2) drill blanks into end block holes; shank upward, but with taper ground on end to make insertion into plate holes easier (wax shafts).
