  With the scroll carving roughed out, I layout and drill the beg box opening using flat-bottomed-cutting spur drills.. In this photo, I am using a chisel to cut the wood between the drill holes.
  Notice that I have taped a piece of brass sheet metal around scroll to protect it against the inevitable 'slip'. Leave the bottom 0.215" thick...
  The initial beg box is cleaned out. The peg box must, however, continue well under the scroll for the 'A' tuning peg and string.
  This is the initial beg box internal shape gage being used to check depth of box.
  This is how gage fits inside: even with the top surface of neck when the peg box depth is correct.
