This is a comparison of my two peg box gages: The light colored one (in front) is the initial peg box shape. The brass colored one (behind) shows how much deeper the 'foot' of the beg box must be extended.
This can be done in several ways; I have settled on a carbide ball cutter in a high speed dremel tool.
Great care must be exercised: use two hands on the tool and work slowly, cleaning the peg box, and checkiing measurements regularly.
The side walls of the peg box are 0.250" but the top surface is only to be 0.150" wide, then tapering down inside on a bevel. The area where the tuning pegs operate is left at full 1/4" width.
Here the dimension is marked in pencil using the compass with retracted pencil to mark from the outside surface of the side of the neck.
