One end of the glue liner strip is beveled as shown and the slot in the block is cut and chiseled / filed out to match.
Properly fitted, the glue liner strip will touch the rib inner surface behind the block and there will be just enough clearance for the liner strip to be lightly pressed into position.
The top of the 'liner strip should be just slightly above or even with the top of the end blocks when installed.
All twelve liner strips are fitted in this manner [(24) end joints total].
In order to glue the liner strips into the rib structure, the glue liner strips must be clamped firmly to the inside of the ribs while the glue dries. This method was shown to me by Salem violin maker Thomas LaDuke.
It consists of an inner support surface with a 5* angle edge and 5* angle hardwood wedges.
