I turn the plate support as necessary to comfortably control the sanding process. Sanding is ideal for this step as it does not tear out wood from the surface..
These are the tools for finsihing the inside of the plates: gouges, chisels, scrapers, violin making curved planes, and various grades of sanding paper with a foam sanding block.
Here I am using a detail sander to work an area. Again, low angle light (from the side) will help to show up areas that need smoothed.
Also, slide your finger tips over the inside surfaces. They will feel even tiny sudden surface contour changes.
Here the top plate graduation is contoured.
Notice also that the plate wood is left at full thickness from the end block contact surface to both sides for strength, as the famous Italian makers did....
Remember: remove no wood from gluing surfaces.
